Proofreading is a great retirement gig for the bookish senior. I have been buying books for nearly sixty years, now people are paying me to read their books. Get the whole story at Senior Proof Reader.
I got started proofreading serendipitously. I saw the great prices on the indie science fiction available for the Amazon KindleOpens in a new window and started working my way through the genre. At the time, Amazon offered one-month free loans on first books in a series to readers with Kindles, I was hooked.
I specialize in science fiction, historical fiction, alternate history, fantasy, history, biographies, adventure, thrillers and popular science. I'll give horror, romance, erotica and YA a go, no polemics though, too dark. I will take your book in Word or Google doc format when complete or in separate chapters as it is written. I will check spelling, punctuation, grammar, usage, awkward or inappropriate wording, redundancies all over again (couldn't help myself), confusing terms, readability, consistency and tense issues. On request, I will translate British English to American English. I will return your book marked up with Microsoft Word tracking or Google Docs suggesting.
Let me polish your book by proofreading. Contact me.
the Ask Esmeralda Psychic Readings App
Somehow, not sure, I got turned on to building apps. I have to say building because I am using the MIT App Inventor building blocks. I have not run into a limitation yet, but just getting started. I could have used the Java, I am a Sun Certified Java Programmer, but too much like work.
The first app is a psychic reading app. Ask Esmeralda a question, she gives you an answer. The picture of Fran in the image of the app is only a place holder until I get some graphics done. She should have bigger earrings to be a Gypsy (are we still allowed to say that?) Fortune Teller. I have several more planned, but want to get this out there first.

How would you like to take a fabulous trip to the destination of your dreams — and have Uncle Sam give you a great big tax deduction? It can be done. One of my clients traveled throughout China and Hawaii, wrote off the entire trip — and won the resulting audit.

As earlier discussed, Data Mining with a Spider is a way to populate directories. The plan is to supply an URL and get back the Title, Description and Keywords. Looking around at the available spiders led me to two excellent articles by James Bruce. How To Build A Basic Web Crawler To Pull Information From A Website (Part 1) and How To Build A Basic Web Crawler To Pull Information From A Website (Part 2). These two articles and a little bit of PHP scripting and I had enough to make a first pass on populating the directory websites.
The little bit of PHP I got from putting together the open source spider code gave me the example code to put together a little mySQL db to help me save the URLs and other data collected while I was surfing the web.
I bought a email extractor to extract emails. The websites being given on topic links may want to enhance their listing with features like banners, multiple category listing, featuring, etc.
Web Spiders are an important tool for a Directory builder like myself.
There are several uses for Web Spiders:
- Data mining
- Validating, real?
- Email extraction
- Reciprocal link checking.
- Dead Link checking (see Validating)
- Extracts URL
- Extracts Title
- Extracts Description
- Extracts email
Wish me Luck with my Vanity website, only $2.99 a year! BobtheKnowItAll.info, I do the Research so You Don't Have To.
I am always making investigations into ideas for the websites, Money Making Ideas, ideas for around the house and life general. I might research planting something different in the Fran's Victory Garden or new software for the websites. This new website will list the investigations for each subject. ...continue reading
On the evening of January 27th we got home from our celebration cruise, our 15th Anniversary, Fran's Birthday, and me Shrugging. I got right to work on the websites on the 28th.
There is the new website, HotSauceLinks.com that was inspired by a hot sauce in Barbados. The current plan for this website is blog posts, invited articles and a directory of everything I can find about hot sauces. Down the road maybe some sort of hooking up hot sauce enthusiasts with new hot sauce offerings. Right now tho, I am installing the Directory Press theme on top of WordPress. I've written two short posts for this website, kind of curious how they will survive the theme install.
My Money Making Boating Website was a Boating directory. It was fun and made money so my efforts are biased in that direction. This time I do not want to write code so I am looking at off the shelf software. Of course, first have to think about the desired product, a Link Directory, or an Article Directory, or both. According to current SEO wisdom, link directories are bad because they have been abused, article directories are cool tho. I think a Boutique, well edited link directory is a plus to a website because the site is then getting traffic from similar interest sites. Also part of the motivation here is to investigate my interests and record and organize the results. Article directories are very SEO chic now and even tho I have not worked with them they need to be investigated and available. ...continue reading
In the past when I created a website, typically I would go to GoDaddy, buy a domain name and the minimal hosting package. I would lose interest or not be able to focus and in a year, it would go away. A couple times I have bought a website to play with a technology. I have tried Dot Net Nuke, Joomla, phpLinkDirectory. All of those sites have dried up and blown away. This site was a windows dot net site where I played with Dot Net Nuke and MS Windows dot net. When I made the move to WordPress, I installed word press on this MS Windows site. It didn't work so good. GoDaddy support persuaded me to convert the type of account to linux, and converted me to a "Deluxe Linux" account.
Just hit "Publish" for the second of my new Make Money Online websites. Finished Parts 3 & 4 of Mike Omar's book, How to Make Money Online: Learn how to make money from home with my step-by-step plan to build a $5000 per month passive income website portfolio (of ... each) (THE MAKE MONEY FROM HOME LIONS CLUB) and his Make Money from Home Lions Club website. After Part 4, the websites are complete.
FransVictoryGarden.us, "A blog of Fran's Victory Garden and a discussion of resources" and RCGoerlichandCoInc.biz, "follow Bob Goerlich as he finds how to Make Money Online" need LOTS of Polish and Promotion. But, the first two sites are down the ways and launched, wish them luck.
Well not really a new website. Fran's Victory Garden has been a website for several years, granted it was a seed/prototype. I was using it as a tool to learn Joomla and the directory add-in, SobiPro. In the end the Joomla and SobiPro tools were more powerful than I needed and I chose to go with the more intuitive WordPress software. Also, the software is just the tool kit, so lets get to the part where I Make Money Online.
First let me tell you about the website conversion. I'll start over with Fran's Victory Garden working thru the lessons in Mike Omar's "How to Make Money Online" book and his Make Money from Home Lions Club website. Part 1, puts together the framework of the website. Lesson 1 is Make a Website using WordPress. Lesson 2 sets up the theme and populates the website with the boilerplate pages and the sidebar widgets. Lesson 3, add the Social Media buttons, Contact form, Google Maps, and PayPal buttons, an important lesson for the newbie, this takes the website from a shell, to a functioning website. Lesson 4, website backups, security, and server monitoring.
Let me bore you with tales of web creation in the late '90s, the Paleo-WorldWideWeb. Today you get yourself a spiffy site in an hour or so using WordPress. In the old days, it was two miles to school, up hill both ways...
I used MicroSoft products at work so it was easier for me to get started with the MS toolset. The MS environment consisted in IIS, Active Server Pages and MS SQL Server. My day job was as a computer programmer, Mainframe Assembler & Cobol were my tools in trade, so an additional motive was to learn this new technology. Every line of code on the website was written my me. Enough about the coding, how about Make Money Online?
First, before the Make Money Online, let tell you about the boating website, it was a directory of about 25 general boating categories subdivided into over 200 sub-categories. It had a geographical index of regions and locations. I seeded my directory by web searches for each category and keying up info from magazines. Remember, this was in the '90s.
When I first became aware of the "World Wide Web" in about 1995 I hopped right in. It was a different world then, everyone was was talking about Baud rates, 14.4, 38, 56k. When was the last time you heard the word "Baud"? People set their browsers to not load images, a different world. Anyway, I didn't know what to do, but no one did, so I started.
The first web page I did was the kind that hangs off the ISP's website in my user folder. Did the HTML in note pad, again, a different world. My first site was "Win Big Prizes". I used search engines to find Houses, Harleys, and Porches that were in sweepstakes or being raffled off. I remember my lede, "Only Big Prizes, no mouse pads, no tee shirts, no Teach Yourself Esperanto courses". Anyway, didn't make any money, but I did learn HTML.
The hurdle after the technical is where does the content come from? I latched on to the Directory model. Everyone publishing wants exposure, so I could add value by classifying and grouping other's efforts into a more useful format. I used to enjoy the serendipity of looking at the books in the library near the book I was looking for, I would try to replicate that on the web.
